Forest Heights Collegiate

2010 - 2011 Course Calendar

Course Change Policy & Protocol

The Ministry of Education (MOE) and ultimately the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) assign staffing for the coming year, based upon the course selections that students make in January/February of the current school year. It is imperative that students make informed course selections, resulting in a relevant program and the achievement of personal goals. Students must dedicate themselves to doing the necessary research, resulting in the creation of an effective program that addresses current interests and future aspirations. Students will be required to follow through with their selected program unless they are in a position to provide documentation to support the reduction in selected courses or can demonstrate a legitimate reason to alter courses previously selected. In this manner we can maintain a stable and consistent population, reasonable class sizes, and appropriate levels of staffing to deliver a comprehensive and meaningful program. If students make changes to their end destination or career choice, the student must see their respective counsellor before the end of May. Course changes will be kept to a minimum in order to maintain class sizes that support an effective teaching-learning environment. Reasonable requests may be accommodated; however there are no guarantees as facilities and class sizes are limiting factors. Course changes will not be entertained between semesters, unless they relate directly to graduation requirements. Please ensure that you select your program carefully.

Ontario Secondary School Diploma Requirements

Students who entered Grade 9 on or after September 1999 will be eligible to receive the OSSD upon the successful completion of 30 credits including 18 compulsory credits, 12 elective credits and 2 additional requirements. Note: Students are not required to complete the 30 credits in 4 years.

Students must earn the following compulsory credits to obtain the Ontario Secondary School Diploma:

Plus one credit from each of the following groups:

* A maximum of 3 credits in English as a second language (ESL) or English Literacy Development (ELD) may be counted towards the 4 compulsory credits in English, but the fourth credit must be earned for a Grade 12 compulsory English course.

** A maximum of 2 credits in cooperative education can count as compulsory credits.

In addition to the compulsory credits, students must complete:

*** May include up to four credits achieved through approved Dual Credit courses.

Minimum Course Load Requirements at FHCI

Semestered Program

Students registering at FHCI must choose a program with a course load according to the following school policy:

Grade 9 students will take 5 compulsory courses and 3 elective courses. Grades 10 and 11 students are required to take a full timetable of eight credits over two semesters. Students in their fourth and fifth years are expected to take three credits per semester, except under extraordinary circumstances. It is a Ministry requirement that students under the age of 18 be in full attendance. It is our expectation that students under 16 years of age and with less than 16 credits will take 8 credits per school year.

These are the minimum requirements at FHCI for students to earn 30 credits (18 compulsory, 12 elective) in four years as required by the Ministry of Education to earn the Secondary School Diploma. Students are not obligated to complete their program within four years and may exercise their option to return for a fifth year to broaden their experience or portfolio. We encourage students to graduate with more than 6 grade 12 courses so a greater range of opportunities is available to them in planning their future.

The Ministry of Education or Waterloo Region District School Board does not restrict students from completing their secondary school education in greater than four years.

Co-Operative Education

Co-operative Education allows a student to gain valuable work experience related to an in-school course. Co-operative Education involves the completion of three components: Pre-Employment, Integration, and work experience. Students may earn from one to five co-op credits, based upon the number of hours of work experience.

Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP)

Students who participate in this program may obtain both apprenticeship hours and high school credits at the same time. FHCI offers apprenticeship programs in Electrical, Truck and Coach, and Educational Assistant.

Learning Services (Special Education)

Learning Strategies (GLE) This optional credit course is offered to help IEP students who are struggling to develop good learning strategies in order to be successful in their course load. Students receive daily instruction in organization, time management, goal setting, and various learning strategies. Students are eligible to take one of these credits in each of their four years.

Grade 10 GLE2OI Learning Strategies 2: Skills for Success in Secondary School, Open (Referral from Learning Services)

Course Fees

The school at no cost makes all basic material essential for the completion of a program available to students. Fees for course enhancements are estimates and may change. Final amounts will be determined and communicated by September. Students/families requiring financial assistance should contact any staff member. The staff member will ensure that the student's issue is dealt with in an appropriate, sensitive and confidential manner.

Full Disclosure

Full disclosure is a Ministry of Education requirement that all grade 11 and 12 courses attempted and marks earned be recorded on the Ontario Student Transcript. In order for a course change not to appear on the transcript, the student must have all "course drop" or "change" paperwork signed and returned to the Guidance Department before the deadline of 5 instructional days after the first report card in the semester.
